The Bench (Review)

The Bench has used many different aspects of Film Language in their production. They used non-diegetic sound of the voiceover of the main character when he’s speaking, there is also a song which was added during the editing; this had created a sense of reality. Mise en scene was also used very effectively in the production as the costumes such as the hoodies, showed that the character is not very wealthy and may be from a deprived area compared to the character wearing a suit, this also showed importance and power as the man wearing a suit threatened the other character and was dangerous. The main props were the bike and the rolled up cigarette; they were both key in the film as the bike showed how the person travels and the pace at which the character was travelling, it also suggests that he may be young as he is still riding a bike. The rolled up cigarette looked like drugs which also suggests what they do in their spare time. There were a variety of shots that were used in the production, there was a tracking shot of the character riding the bike, and this showed the speed at which the character was travelling. There were close ups of the main characters face when he was smoking to show us what he feels like when he’s smoking. The cuts used in the film were straight cuts; they kept showing the two main characters life in continuity editing. Overall from the sound to the props and to the editing, the production was effective in gaining the audience’s attention and in creating a story which was interesting.

WWW: The cinematography, sound, mise en scene, and editing was very good and put together very well which made it very interesting.

EBI: There were more types of cuts in the film.
